A prime example of this would be recently my boyfriend of two years and I got into a huge argument. We ended up going on a break to rethink our relationship and feelings for each other. This argument began because of hunting season. I work full-time and am in school full-time and when I am not in school or at work I am cleaning my house, cooking dinner, doing homework, or sleeping. I became very frustrated doing everything by myself when I have more responsibilities than he did yet I was doing everything in our apartment. I suppressed how I was feeling for two weeks because I did not want to start an argument and finally one day I confronted him since I hadn't expressed my feelings for so long I overreacted and caused a bigger argument than needed.
My preferred communication method now is expressing how I feel and talking through our problems to find an outcome that we both agree on. Today my boyfriend came home from hunting and immediately plopped in front of the television and placed his fast food bag on the coffee table after I cleaned the house all weekend. I initiated the conversation by telling him that we need to talk and I told him that I was upset at him for being gone all weekend and not helping me clean the house. He then said, "I helped, I brought you my step mom's shampooer." (Side bar: He knows how to make me tick). I expressed my anger and frustrations and we both hopefully resolved the issue by agreeing that he will help more throughout the week before he leaves for gun hunting this weekend.
